Spring Dogfish Sightings

It’s that time of year again, when spiny dogfish theoretically head out from North Carolina waters on their way back up to New England for the summer.  However, last year there were reports of dogfish sticking around Morehead City and Cape Lookout until mid-June, and the Rulifson lab personally witnessed a decent-sized school lurking inside the hook of Cape Lookout on Memorial Day.

I’m wondering if these spring stragglers are really that uncommon.  Certainly the leftovers last year seemed to be active and in good health, so the rising temperature doesn’t seem to hurt them.  Has anyone noticed any late season dogfish in North Carolina waters this year?  Please let me know when, where, and any other details in the Comments section.  Any other interesting shark-related stories from NC waters would be appreciated too.
