Cape Cod Great Whites on the Beach

The Dorsal Fin has posted a story from Cape Cod on yet another confirmed sighting of a large great white hanging out in shallow water.  It also has a nifty little video showing interviews with swimmers and lifeguards at the beach, and the reaction to the shark sighting is refreshingly even-keeled.  Is it possible that shark hysteria is finally on the wane and that Massachusetts residents and tourists are fine with sharing the water with a potentially dangerous endangered species?  It certainly seems to be on Nauset Beach.

I’m always pleasantly surprised with the reaction by New Englanders to the local sea life.  Back in 2004 when a large female great white found itself stuck in a salt pond near Woods Hole, the expected outcry for its demise was replaced by throngs of locals crowding the island to catch a glimpse of the animal.  Here’s hoping New England turns out to be the Farallones of the East Coast.

I seriously doubt it, though that video is indeed refreshing.

Wait until it chomps someone: then you’ll see the hysteria in full bloom.
